SKYLINE IS A DISCIPLE-MAKING COMMUNITY!

We believe it is normative for all Christ-followers to intentionally disciple other Christ-followers, expecting their disciples to in turn do the same. This work is the privilege and calling of all God’s people.

We want the Kingdom to become a reality in our midst, rather than a theology in our heads, and we believe the values we live together through worship, disciple-making and generational ministry will make this possible. As we see throughout the Gospels, Jesus invites men and women to follow him—to find life that is truly life. Through his teachings, miracles, and passion, He has demonstrated and enabled a new way to be human—living in renewed relationship with God, the world, and each other. This is discipleship.

Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.
— Dietrich Bonhoeffer

A life of discipleship can be summed up in the deceptively simple phrase, "Follow me." To follow in Rabbinic language meant to become an apprentice, a disciple. The word follow is in the present-tense imperative which stresses continuity and means “live a life following me.” The call of Jesus inherently involves a journey—leaving one way of life and entering a new one. To follow not only meant to “walk in the footsteps of a master,” but to be with. Follow me is a call to a specific person that involves a radical shift in orientation. We might hear the call as: Come from yourself to Me

So then, discipleship in the Jesus way is a whole-life movement.

Our Mission

To make disciples of all nations by calling people to repent, be baptized, and love God and neighbor by sharing the Good News and performing acts of love and compassion.

The foundational vehicle for discipleship at Skyline is Discovery Bible Studies. We also provide additional tools, training, and opportunities throughout the year to pursue this calling.

What is a Discovery Bible Study?

Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is a discipleship study where we read the Bible together in community and is often the first connection point for people as they come to Skyline. The study is full of conversation, and the facilitator is there to help you discover what God’s Word is saying to you. We always end by asking how we can go and live out the truths that we have discovered together.

Each DBS Group encourages disciple-making, obedience, ministry, and leadership development. It is also a great place to meet new friends.

Like newborn infants, long for the pure milk of the Word, that by it you may grow up into salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
— 1 Peter 2:2

How it Works

Discovery Bible Studies have the greatest impact when each person in the study reads through the passage before group time. At the beginning of the study, the group goes around the circle, allowing everyone to read a few verses each from that week’s passage. Then everyone reads through again, this time in the opposite direction. Going through the passage multiple times may seem repetitive, but you’ll be surprised what you notice when you read it through the second time.

As the Word of God is being read, everyone listens for the Holy Spirit to give them insight:

What does this story tell me about God?

What does this story tell me about people (or myself)?

If this is God's Word for my life, how will I obey it?

Who am I going to tell?

At the end of the time, the facilitator asks everyone to share their thoughts on this question: “Since we believe God’s Word is true, how can we take this truth and trust God to live it through us today?” Then we close in prayer, asking God to work through us throughout the week.

How to join a DBS

Because of the unique nature of a DBS, you can join in anytime and not be lost. Every group welcomes new people.
